About Me

I’m a Hungry (and occasionally Hangry) Ginger cooking in Browns Point, just across the water from Tacoma, with my husband Andrew and three orange cats who supervise everything from the counter they are definitely not allowed on.

I grew up in West Seattle, and Andrew and I spent eight years there before trading the Alki view for a Commencement Bay one. I still think of West Seattle as home base, and you’ll find plenty of it in the archive.

How this started

Before I left for college, my mother made me prove I could feed myself, so I cooked dinner once a week for an entire summer. I fell for all of it: the first read-through of a recipe, the shopping, the chopping, and finally sitting down with people I love. I went on to get an honors degree in English literature at UW and wrote my thesis on food and literature (and presented a tiramisu I’d spent months perfecting to the class). I’ve been writing about food here, on and off, since 2010.

How I cook today

Acid-forward and a little funky. If a dish can take a squeeze of lemon, a spoonful of preserved lemon, a splash of fish sauce or a few anchovies, it’s getting them. Pasta is my all-time favorite food, and Italian, Mediterranean, Southeast Asian, Japanese and Mexican cooking are where I spend most of my time.

I shop the Proctor Farmers Market on Saturdays, cook from a well-stocked chest freezer (oldest first, always), and plan our week’s meals in Notion, which has come a long way from the Trello board I used to brag about here. Weeknights are fast; weekends are for projects.

What’s happening now

From November 2026 through October 2027, I’m cooking one or two recipes from every cookbook on my shelf, all 74 of them, following the Pacific Northwest seasons. It’s called Cookbook Year, and by the end I’ll know which books earn their shelf space.
